Introduction

Pornography is a controversial subject in virtually every context. Research has found that while there is no direct causal link between pornography and sexual aggression, pornography use among those already at risk to cause sexual harm can increase risk or imminence through its disinhibiting effects. Given the changing developmental and situational factors involved in adolescence, professionals familiar with the current knowledge of the field will wish to:

  1.  Understand the interaction between pornography use and risk factors by taking into account contextual factors.
  2. Promote the development of a balanced, healthy lifestyle and limit harmful and illegal behavior.
  3. Intervene with adolescents by providing guidance and respect, rather than through means that create shame and drive sexuality underground.
